For many people, Chuck Yeager is a true hero in the strictest definition of the word. Throughout his career, Yeager displayed distinguished courage and performed several extraordinarily brave deeds, although he only considered such acts as following his duty. Many people recognize Yeager as the first person to break the sound barrier.
In August 1947, Yeager transferred to Muroc Air Base, California the premier proving ground for the day’s most technologically advanced aircraft. Soon after arriving at Muroc, Yeager received orders to test the X-1, an experimental aircraft that some believed might exceed Mach One. On October 14, Yeager flew the X-1, faster than the speed of sound. With that flight, he traveled faster than any human being ever had, a remarkable feat considering the fact that he had broken several ribs during a horseback riding accident only a few days before.
There are barriers that we face on many fronts; physical, financial, social, and especially spiritual. It’s the spiritual barrier that we want to discuss, and I want to challenge you to break the final barrier that both churches and individuals face.
Moses sent out the 12 spies to look over Caanan. The spies returned with conflicting reports. 10 of the spies were fearful and did not believe that the Israelites could conquer the land. Joshua and Caleb believed that God was with them and He would give them the land. Israel was defeated by the barrier of unbelief and was forced to remain in the wilderness until all those above the age of 20 had passed away. Only Joshua and Caleb remained because they had broken the barrier of unbelief and trusted in God. 40 years later when Israel came to the Jordan River, the Levites that were carrying the ark touched the waters of the river with their feet by faith, and all Israel crossed over on dry ground.
There are several barriers that we face. One of those barriers is our praise and worship. The devil is aware what breakthroughs can occur when God’s people will give free worship and praise. King Jehosophat led Israel against Ammon and Moab with nothing but worship and praise. Ammon and Moab turned on each other, and were destroyed. Worship not only lets us enjoy a wonderful service, but it creates an atmosphere where strongholds can be pulled down and destroyed.
Another barrier we face is prayer. Prayer is where the action is! Getting into prayer will change your life for the better. If there is one thing the devil is afraid of its people who pray. I could go on writing about this point, but believe me that God does nothing but in answer to prayer.
A third barrier that we face is witnessing. The devil is not afraid of people who sit on their pews and do nothing. Acts 1:8 says that when the Holy Ghost comes upon you, you will receive power and be witnesses. People who say they have the Holy Ghost and do not exercise the power of God or witness cause me to question what they really possess.
A huge barrier that we encounter is giving. In Acts 10 where we read about Cornelius we find an important key to revival. Cornelius was a Gentile, and the scripture says the angel that came to Cornelius told him that his prayers and alms giving had come up as a memorial to God. As a result God was giving him an opportunity to enter the kingdom of God. One of the keys to revival is giving. You cannot just pay your tithe, which I hope that you do. If you don’t you should be ashamed, because that belongs to God. It is clear in scripture that giving is what will break down so many barriers in your life.
There are several things about unbelief that we need to take note of. First is that unbelief can kill you. In 2 Kings 7 the Syrians besieged Samaria, and great famine came upon the city. A donkey’s head sold for 80 pieces of silver, and a quarter part of dove’s dung for 5 pieces of silver. People in 2 Kings 7 who were besieged by Samaria were eating their children. When the king heard this he was ready to kill the prophet Elisha. Elisha said to him in 2 Kings 7:1-2, “Hear ye the word of the LORD; Thus saith the LORD, To morrow about this time shall a measure of fine flour be sold for a shekel, and two measures of barley for a shekel, in the gate of Samaria. Then a lord on whose hand the king leaned answered the man of God, and said, Behold, if the LORD would make windows in heaven, might this thing be? And he said, Behold, thou shalt see it with thine eyes, but shalt not eat thereof,” KJV. The next day lepers went to the Syrian camp and found they were all gone. When they brought the news back to the city there was such a rush at the gate that the man who did not believe was trampled to death.
Secondly, unbelief will stop the miraculous power of God from working. Mark 6:4-6 says, “Jesus said unto them, A prophet is not without honour, but in his own country, and among his own kin, and in his own house. And he could there do no mighty work, save that he laid his hands upon a few sick folk, and healed them. And he marvelled because of their unbelief,” KJV. Even Jesus himself, God manifested in the flesh, who walked among them, was hindered from the miraculous because of people’s unbelief.
Third, unbelief will keep the miraculous from you. Heb 3:12-19 says, “Take heed, brethren, lest there be in any of you an evil heart of unbelief, in departing from the living God. But exhort one another daily, while it is called To day; lest any of you be hardened through the deceitfulness of sin. For we are made partakers of Christ, if we hold the beginning of our confidence stedfast unto the end; While it is said, To day if ye will hear his voice, harden not your hearts, as in the provocation. For some, when they had heard, did provoke: howbeit not all that came out of Egypt by Moses. But with whom was he grieved forty years? was it not with them that had sinned, whose carcases fell in the wilderness? And to whom sware he that they should not enter into his rest, but to them that believed not? So we see that they could not enter in because of unbelief.” KJV Israel did not enter into the miraculous because they did not believe God, and Paul is warning the church that the same will happen to her it they do not believe God.
Finally, we need to understand that Abraham did not have unbelief. Rom 4:20-22 says, “He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness,” KJV. What a testimony! That as a result of believing God, Abraham was considered to be righteous.
God can do anything! My eldest son was had his feet turned into each other when he was a child and beginning to walk. He wore braces to try and straighten them as well as orthopedic shoes. I had had the same issue when I was a child and my mother had had me prayed for and instantly I was healed. I reminded God about this and the Lord spoke to me telling me to go buy him tennis shoes. In faith I called my wife and told her what God had told me. She went and bought the shoes, did not put the braces or orthopedic shoes back on and within 7 days his feet were straight and today he runs Spartan races several times each year.
Do you want unbelief to hold back the power of God from working in your life and in your church? Unbelief will keep you in the wilderness where you will perish. Why would you need a beautiful facility then? Unbelief will stop the power of God from working the miraculous in your life, and in the church.
On June 12, 1987 President Ronald Regan stood at the Brandenburg Gate in West Berlin, Germany and said, “General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!
Today I challenge you to tear down this barrier of unbelief, and place your faith in God to do what He has said He will do. Go further in your faith than you’ve ever gone before. Do not forget the promises God has made to you about your personal situation. Don’t forget what God has promised to your Church. Can you believe God to do it? He will!
Are you in need of a miracle today? Jesus Christ came to meet you at the point of your need. If you have pain in your body you can be healed right now if you will have faith in God. The greatest miracle of all is the miracle of salvation, and today you can receive Jesus in your life if you will believe that He will forgive you of all your sin. Are there problems in your family, your work, or even your finances? Jesus Christ is the answer to the problems in your life. If you will push past the barrier of unbelief you will see the miraculous power of God in your life. Whatever you need from God, He is here ready to help you if you’ll just have faith.
